Germany begins campaign to defend its FIFA World Cup title against Mexico

Germany will start defending their World Cup title against Mexico on Sunday at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in the first round of Group F of the 2018 World Cup.

Germany hopes to follow in the footsteps of Italy and Brazil, the only two teams to have crowned the title twice in a row, the first in 1934 and 1938, and the second 1958 and 1962.

But coach Joachim Loew, aware of the difficulty of the task, admitted at the press conference on the eve of Mexico's confrontation that retaining the title was "the worst achievement ever and history has shown.

"The teams are developing and changing," Loew said at the Luzhniki Stadium, which he hopes to return to on July 15 for the World Cup finals.

On the list chosen by Loew for the World Cup in Russia, nine players who led Manchavt to his fourth World Cup in 2014 in Brazil. But the Germans are missing very influential players such as captain Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and top scorer Miroslav Klose (16 goals).

Germany will have a chance to progress gradually in the first round, as their group appears on paper, with Mexico, South Korea and Sweden.
